The Appalachia Ministry Center in Ashland, Kentucky, aims to break cycles of poverty, food insecurity and addiction in rural communities near the Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia borders. Serving a region of 25 million people, it tackles unemployment, poverty and drug abuse. Thirteen Appalachian counties in Kentucky are “at risk” for low-income and high unemployment. One-third earn less than $25,000 a year. The center provides support and education for families to overcome these challenges.
